I recently found out about a trick that makes peeling hard boiled eggs easier! It starts with a gentle tap until you hear a snap. π
Ingredients:
- Large Eggs
Method:
If you are using eggs that have been refrigerated, set them out for about an hour so they can come to room temperature before starting this method.
Sound on for this video! Gently tap the big end of each egg. Stop tapping when you hear the ‘snap’ or ‘tink’ sound. My understanding is that this is the membrane between the egg and shell releasing.
Important – don’t tap the eggs so hard that the shell breaks. If you break the shell, use the egg for something else instead of boiling it.
Place a single layer of eggs into a pot and add enough cool tap water to cover the eggs with about an inch of water.
Bring to a boil, then immediately remove from heat and cover with a lid.
Set your timer for 12 minutes.
After 12 minutes, remove the eggs from the pot and place them into an ice bath.
They are ready to peel! Then use in your favorite recipe or refrigerate.
Good luck!
Notes:
The eggs I have been using lately are from Vital Farms, their tag line is “Keeping it Bullsh*t Free“. Their mission is to produce ethically sourced food. Check them out. The yolks are very orange, creamy and delicious! I admit that their eggs are as good as the ones we were getting from our own flock of happy backyard chickens – our young hens should start laying hopefully by October (earlier this year our laying hens were practically wiped out in one day by a hawk target practicing π ).
